The String Queens

Music!

From time to time I’d like to share my personal music discoveries with you.  Warning, these are YouTube Links. I apologize in advance for the ads, if you, like me, don’t pay them.

In my last visit to Dru’s Book Musings, I offered up these selections.

String Queens
Sue Foley
Claudia Hayden
Nina Simone

Here are a few more for your enjoyment:

A local DC singer, Eva Cassidy, who died of skin cancer in 1996 at the age of 33, has a new album out this month, I Can Only Be Me.  Her amazing voice is backed up by the London Symphony Orchestra- through the magic of computers.  The song, “I Can Only Be Me,” is a cover of the Michael Jackson song.  The late Christine MacVie, of Fleetwood Mac was an Eva Cassidy fan. Here’s Eva’s heart wrenching version of her “Songbird” from this album.

One of my book groups is reading Crying in H Mart by Indie Rock Star, Michelle Zauner.  (This link explains the term, “Jimmy Fallon Big.”) I love “Be Sweet”  by Japanese Breakfast.  Crying in H Mart is a damn good book, too.

I’ll leave you with this from Vitamin String Quartet.  It’s their take on Black Swan. And one more from the DC-based, amazing and occasionally pregnant String Queens,  because I do love their combination of Adele’s “We Could Have Had it All,” and the duo Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy.”

Give these a listen and let me know what you think –

  1. What a wonderful post, Lane. Thank you! I do love those String Queens. Do you suppose the Miss Demeanors could dress up in some of their clothes?

  2. My husband and I are huge Eva Cassidy fans! One of my favorites by her is the song fields of Gold; Doc loves her cover of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I love some of your other choices, too, including Nina Simone. Thanks for reminding me about Eva. I’m digging out her music now!

  3. These are great and I will check them out! Music has been an immense inspiration for me, ranging from me naming characters after favorite musicians, to listening to songs before sitting down to write. Nina Simone is also a favorite.
