Sharing My Thoughts on Craft and Marketing

My name is Dawn M. Barclay, and I am thrilled to join the wonderful authors at Miss Demeanors!

My standalone fiction, written as D.M. Barr, includes the psychological/domestic/romantic suspense novels, Expired Listings, Murder Worth the Weight, and Saving Grace: A Psychological Thriller. My newest release, Deadly When Disturbed, will be released by Level Best Books in January 2025.

I also write non-fiction under my own name. In that vein, LBB will publish my upcoming non-fiction, multi-volume series, Vacations Can Be Murder: A True Crime Lover’s Travel Guide beginning in 2025. These books combine my love of travel, research and suspense. This actually marks my second foray into niche travel guidebook writing; I won the Lowell Thomas Gold award in 2023 for my autism travel bible: Traveling Different: Vacation Strategies for Parents of the Anxious, the Inflexible, and the Neurodiverse.

I love, love, love editing and recently finished my second stint co-editing a Sisters in Crime NY/Tri-state anthology: New York State of Crime, published by Down & Out Books in the fall of 2024. It includes my third published short story, Orchestral Removals in the Dark

My primary careers have been in sales and marketing, both in the travel and real estate industries (which is why devious tales involving real estate and travel keep cropping up in my work). So, it’s likely that many of my blogs will deal with marketing your books. But I do enjoy interviewing other authors and sharing my favorite novels, so you might find a few future posts like that as well.

In my spare time, I enjoy my dogs (I adopt senior rescues), competitive trivia, water aerobics, walking, travel, music, and reading—but I love anything and everything to do with writing. I also love spending time with other writers, which is why I am a board member with Sisters in Crime New York/Tri-state, a past board member of Mystery Writers of America-New York Chapter, the former president of Hudson Valley Scribes, and a member of the International Thriller Writers.

Nothing makes me happier than hearing from readers. 1. Welcome Dawn!
You will be such an asset to Miss Demeanors, and I look forward to reading your posts.

We overlap in several areas, from travel to trivia—and you’re a Dog Person, too! Who are those adorables in your photo?

I’m struck by the diversity in your writing, and those travel books look worthwhile and important. An added bonus will be if you have marketing tips to share~

  2. Welcome, Dawn! Miss Demeanors is thrilled that you will be joining us. We share a love of editing. I’m looking forward to hearing more about your writing and life.

  3. I don’t understand people who love to edit — I do, however, get dog people. How old are Phoebe and Doofus? Is a Snoodle a Schnauzer and a Poodle?
    Too stinkin’ cute!
    Welcome!

    1. Phoebe was about 12 when we lost her to kidney disease. She was a senior rescue and we had her for only about 6 years but she was the best dog ever. A friend used to kid that she was smart enough to do calculus. Doofy (yes, a Schnauzer/Poodle mix) was the stupidest dog I ever had (hence his name) and yet, the sweetest, a real Mama’s boy. I had him about a year longer than Phoebe. At the end, he was blind, deaf, incontinent, and had dementia and I was still devastated when I lost him. I know I probably shouldn’t use that photo since I now have Harley (Pit/Lab rescue) but I really love that shot.
